PERSONAL HISTORY:
Melvin A. Edwards, 50, was born and raised in Springfield, MA, where he attended area public schools – including the former Technical High School. Melvin went on to attend Westfield State College from 1980 – 1982, where he studied political science. He is married to his wife of over five years, Suzanne, and between them have six children, all adults, and eleven grandchildren.
Melvin was previously employed at the state’s Department of Mental Retardation for 21 years, working out of the Monson Development Center in Palmer, MA, since 1992.
ACTIVISM:
An active member of his local community for many years, Melvin is currently a member of the following organizations:

- Keep Springfield Beautiful (President & Member of Board of Directors)
- Springfield Partners for Community Action (Member of Board of Directors)
- Mason Wright Retirement Community (Member of Board of Directors)

- Ward 3 Democratic Committee
- Stop Access – Addressing Minors Access to Alcohol
AWARDS:
In recognition of his long history of activism and volunteerism on behalf of his community, Melvin has received the 2008 City Council Proclamation for Community Service, the 2008 Springfield Democratic City Committee Legend Award, and the 2009 Hometown Hero Award, presented by the Reminder Publications.
